A Modern Theory of Stasis

Abstract: This article revisits stasis theory, the rhetorical tool that outlines the strategic options of a defendant in a moral or legal accusation. By analyzing the burden of proof of an accuser and deducing a comprehensive model for a modern theory of stasis from the resulting obligations, it develops a system of ten vital staseis (key issues), each of which is by itself sufficient for a defense in front of a reasonable audience. The resulting modern theory of stasis can be a useful heuristic tool for the rhetorical … Show more

“…This surprising observation became the starting point for the second round of analysis, which details the rhetorical legitimation strategies that the informants recount and/or apply. Strategies of rhetorical defense are developed not only in classical texts on the genre of legal speech (Hoppmann, 2014) but also in a number of modern socio-political contexts (Just & Mouton, 2014;Ware & Linkugel, 1973), including an increasing interest in organizational crisis communication (Coombs et al, 2010). In this latter context, Benoit (1997Benoit ( , 2015 adopted classical rhetorical concepts to develop five general categories for countering an attack and restoring organizational image: denial, evasion of responsibility, reduction of offensiveness, corrective action, and mortification.…”

“…Recently, Michael J. Hoppmann (2014) classified as many as 15 stases in his “modern” stasis theory; however, the stases are more usually divided into four categories as follows: Conjecture : did something actually happen? Definition : what are the key characteristics of something? What is it? Quality : how severe or mild is something?…”

Cunha posición máis matizada, Kellert analizando diferentes achegas que vinculan creación literaria e teorías do caos sinala que «some of these attempts to make use of chaos theory merit serious attention, some are harmless speculation, and some are simply misleading» (2008: 2).…”
