A Modelling Framework for the Conceptual Design of Low-Emission Eco-Industrial Parks in the Circular Economy: A Case for Algae-Centered Business Consortia

Abstract: This article describes a unique industrial symbiosis employing an algae cultivation unit (ACU) at the core of a novel eco-industrial park (EIP) integrating fossil-fuel fired power generation, carbon capture, biofuel production, aquaculture, and wastewater treatment. A new modelling framework capable of designing and evaluating materials and energy exchanges within an industrial eco-system is introduced. In this scalable model, an algorithm was developed to balance the material and energy exchanges and determin… Show more

“…The current reliance on fossil fuels for energy is not environmentally sustainable and contributes to significant greenhouse gas emissions, waste generation, and unprecedented pollution. 101 Thus, biofuels as the alternative for conventional fossil fuels are gaining more attention day after day. Demand for biofuels is expected to increase threefold by 2050.…”

“…However, global water scarcity poses a great threat to the future development of societies and economies [5]. Industrial parks, areas heavily dependent on water, are spaces in which enterprises converge for production, similar to residential spaces, and are important urban functional spaces [6]. The strategic planning of industrial parks and the effectiveness of their management are key factors affecting their level of economic, social and environmental performance [7].…”

“…[14,15]. In practice, IS is presented as a tangible solution that enables financial and resource efficiency within and across value chains [16,17]. It is traditionally set up in a way that one actor's outputs become another actor's inputs, thus allowing for recirculation of resources [18].…”
