Technological advancements and the growing material set in the world have created a large variety of options for industrial designers, but little attention has been given to the tools and methods that support material selection processes. In this paper, we report on a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement on methods or approaches reported for supporting material selection processes. This review covers various published literature, spanning from 2000 to 2018. The purpose is to examine in detail the evolution of the extensive body of research, its research streams and to position possible areas for further research. A classification framework consisting of six categories of selection approaches was derived from the extensive literature. Additionally, a detailed analysis of predominant approaches was presented along with their advantages and limitations with respect to the material selection domain. Taken together, the insights gained from this study may be of assistance to new researchers and practitioners who are looking for potential selection methods for their specific applications. The review also found that there is an increasing trend of research in recent years in the area of OR-based method application specifically on the multi-criteria decision-making supporting material selection processes.

Nowadays, increasing manufacturing activities cause to critical environmental problems such as global warming and air pollution. These environmental problems have provided increase of environmental awareness in the production process and therefore the green manufacturing (GM) concept has emerged. In general, this concept refers to a production process, which has high efficiency and minimum environmental damage in terms of resources and products. GM has recently become important in almost every sector. Automotive industry has significant importance in terms of economy and employment when considered its sub-industry and other related sectors. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the adoption level of green manufacturing concept in this sector. Fuzzy multi criteria decision making (FMCDM) methods which handle uncertainty in decision making problems can be effectively used for green performance evaluation of companies. In this study, it is aimed to assess green performance of manufacturers which operate in automotive sector by using a MCDM model based on fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) method. This model consists of 5 main criteria which are green design, green energy, green material, green logistics and green management, and 19 sub criteria located under these main criteria. As a result of the study, green energy and low waste criteria were determined as the most important main and sub criteria with weights of 0.268 and 0.1026 respectively. The proposed model can be used as an effective tool for companies operating in the automotive industry to measure and to follow their green performance and to select their suppliers.

In today’s world, where the need for construction projects is increasing from time to time, especially in developing countries such as Ethiopia, sustainability issues and principles were not exercised by construction professionals during the material selection process. At the initial stage, the designer considers materials he/she is familiar with. However, their assumption may not work because the structure that is going to be developed may be different from the previous one. Thus, the designer shall consider sustainability issues during the design period. This article will guide construction stakeholders in the selection of sustainable building materials, specifically masonry materials in the Ethiopian construction industry. The research was carried out in the Addis Ababa Lideta subcity, to identify sustainable building materials for masonry work. The selection process is not depending on a single factor rather it depends on multifactors. The identification was carried out through exploring factors affecting the selection of sustainable building materials for masonry work. The weights of identified factors were determined by pairwise comparison among the factors under consideration. The research is of the empirical type which uses mathematical formula, matrix concept, and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) as a model. In this method, pairwise comparisons were made among the criteria and subcriteria so that the weights of the criteria or subcriteria/or alternative on the bases of the indicated criteria were computed. Then, prioritization was made on the bases of the weight of the criteria. Finally, an alternative with a high score shall be selected. The article identifies the major factor affecting the selection of sustainable building materials for masonry work as social benefit, performance capability, sustainability of the material to reduce environmental impact, waste minimization, resource efficiency, and life cycle cost of the material. Under each criterion, there are number of subcriteria contributed to them. On the basis of the above criteria, 4 alternatives (stone, brick, CEB, and cement block) were proposed from which compressed Earth block (CEB) was selected.
