A model of health status for rheumatoid arthritis. a factor analysis of the arthritis impact measurement scales

Abstract: Health status is a key aspect of quality of life that may be addressed and affected by health care. The measurement of this construct requires the identification of unique and relevant components of health status that can be operationally defined by specific scales or scale groupings. We explored the components of health status that are operationalized by the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scales (AIMS). Prior testing has shown that the AIMS measures delineate at least 3 components of health status: Physical Fun… Show more

“…The original AIMS questionnaire contained 45 items grouped into 9 scales (6). These scale scores could in turn be combined to produce overall models of health status, with 3 or 5 components (7,8). The measurement properties of the AIMS, including its reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change, have been reported (9)(10)(11)(12).…”

“…Several aspects of physical health status were measured in at least 1 of the 3 studies. Studies 1 and 3 included 4 subscales from the AIMS that have been identified as components of lower extremity function: Physical Activity, Mobility, Activities of Daily Living, and Household Activities (20). The reliability and validity of these scales in arthritis populations have been demonstrated by previous research (8,19,21,22).…”

“…The higher the score on the AIMS scales the worse the health status. Pre vious research [9] has revealed that the 9 AIMS scales contain the following 5 components of health status: (I) upper extremity function; (2) lower extremity function; (3) affect; (4) symptom, and (5) social inter action. Table 1 shows the relationship between the 9 AIMS scales and these 5 components of health status.…”
