A model identifying characteristics predictive of successful pelvic floor muscle training outcomes among women with stress urinary incontinence

Abstract: Introduction and hypothesis The aim of this study was to prospectively identify aspects of baseline demographic, clinical, and pelvic morphology of women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) that are predictive of cure with physiotherapist-supervised pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT). Methods Women ≥18 years old with SUI were recruited from urogynecology and pelvic health physiotherapy clinics. Participants completed a 3-day bladder diary, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Urina… Show more

“…Brooks et al reported that disease severity, represented by the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF) questionnaire, was a predicting factor of treatment success. 19 Similar to our study, Obloza et severity as incontinence episodes, not as urinary leakage weight. 20 Singh et al…”

“…Our findings were similar to those of Brooks et al, who evaluated initial pelvic floor contraction strength on the Oxford scale. 19 Furthermore, Yoo et al reported that initial pelvic floor muscle contraction strength was not predictive of treatment success. 26 In our study, myostatin mean level was 2,333.02 pg/mL.…”

“…e difference was statistically notable (P < 0.05). e conclusion of the research was similar to that of Brooks et al [15], both of which indicated that the improved POS algorithm can significantly improve the accuracy of pelvic floor ultrasound diagnosis and the urethral orifice formation rate of patients. It had certain advantages and was applied to the examination and diagnosis of ultrasound.…”

“…Brooks et al studied 77 women who completed a protocol of PFMT, of whom 38 (49%) were deemed to be cured. Among their patients, women with lower scores on the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Urinary Incontinence Short Form were more likely to have a dry pad test after PFMT than those with more severe symptoms [ 19 ]. They concluded that patients who had less severe incontinence symptoms were most likely to be cured with PFMT.…”
