A model-driven approach to Smart Substation automation and integration for Comision Federal de Electricidad

Abstract: Historically, utility substation engineering and protection departments have tended to work independently from grid operations. For example, EMS (Energy Management System) or SCADA systems typically do not fully model substation protection schemes and conversely, substation protection schemes typically have limited knowledge of the power system network topology models of the grid. At CFE -Comision Federal de Electricidad, Mexico, this is exactly the challenge being faced. However the need for a "Smart Grid" or… Show more

“…Subject of studies found using ''strategy 4'' involve automatic generation of simulation models from a standardized power system model [52], deriving test bed configurations for automation systems validation [53] and model transformations for survivability analysis [54]. Study [51] is a survey of promising standards for network and device modeling to be used in a development environment.…”

“…• The use of IEC 61850 SCL in the context of MDE is observed in seven of the reviewed studies (references [33]- [36], [43], [47], [51]). SCL however is focused in the automation level, and its applicability to EMS applications development is questionable.…”

“…Furthermore, transmission line power losses are reduced, and energy efficiency is improved because local loads are supplied by DERs. Although the DER systems are gaining popularity, they derive the difficulties of control and protection in power grids …”

“…Although the DER systems are gaining popularity, they derive the difficulties of control and protection in power grids. [5][6][7][8] Centralized generation is the common practice in conventional power systems where protection coordination is relatively simple because the power flow and fault currents in the power lines are unidirectional. However, the situation is quite different from the microgrid operations.…”
