A Mobility-Aware and Quality-Driven Retransmission Limit Adaptation Scheme for Video Streaming over VANETs

Abstract: Abstract-An adaptive medium access control (MAC) retransmission limit selection scheme is proposed to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11p standard MAC protocol for video streaming applications over vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). A multi-objective optimization framework, which jointly minimizes the probability of playback freezes and start-up delay of the streamed video at the destination vehicle by tuning the MAC retransmission limit with respect to channel statistics as well as packet transmission ra… Show more

“…For instance, [33] considers the drive-thru Internet scenario where a vehicle drives through the roadside infrastructure and subscribes to download media flows for live media presentation. Due to the volatile wireless channel, coupled with the interference and contentions among vehicles in proximity, packet delivery to vehicles in the drive-thru Internet scenario may suffer from severe packet losses.…”

“…This, however, prolongs the packet delivery and may lead to the underflow of playout buffer, resulting in the frozen of video playback. Asefi et al [33] models the impact of packet retransmissions on the video download rate to each user and the resultant QoE accordingly based on (4.27) and (4.32). The optimal retransmission scheme is then developed given the QoE requirement of users.…”

“…FEC is an approach taken in recovering and correcting video stream loss or damage during transmission [88]. Although, FEC add some redundancy in order to compensate the packet loss, it ends up increasing the bandwidth utilization of the network, thereby creating another challenge [15]. MAC scheme that improves video quality through monitoring and frame size changing based on network scenario.…”

“…[3][4][5] Multimedia applications in VANETs have grown recently. [6][7][8][9] For example, voice and video are suitable multimedia to carry and deliver news and advertisements which could greatly enhance the user experience. In addition, multimedia dissemination can play an important role in enhancing road safety.…”
