A Mixed Epithelial and Stromal Tumor of the Kidney in a Ringtail Lemur (Lemur catta)

Abstract: Abstract. Primary renal tumors are rare neoplasms in nonhuman primates. This report describes a mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney (MESTK) in a 14.5-year-old female ringtail lemur. The well-demarcated, solid, and cystic mass was located in the pelvis of the left kidney and consisted histologically of both epithelial and mesenchymal components. The mesenchymal cells were arranged in fascicles around cysts lined by a well-differentiated epithelium. Neither the mesenchymal nor the epithelial parts s… Show more

“…The paramesonephric remnants, originating from the mullerian duct which has close relations to the kidney and upper urothelial tract may be the origin, and perimenopausal events or hormonal therapy against menopause may trigger tumorigenic transformation of this bud [1]. In animals, only one case of MESTK has been reported in a female Ringtail Lemur [12]. Neither estrogen nor progesterone receptors were immunohistochemically identified in this case.…”

“…Neonatal death in captive prosimians is often (54%) related to histologically immature kidneys [Benirschke et al, 1985]. Some cases of renal tumors have been reported [Anderson et al, 1994;Yamaguchi et al, 2007], but renal neoplasms are not common [Goens et al, 2005;Jones & Casey, 1981;Muller et al, 2007]. Primary renal tumors are rare neoplasms in nonhuman primates [Muller et al, 2007].…”
