A MIP Model for Rolling Horizon Surgery Scheduling

Abstract: Most surgery scheduling is done 1 day in advance. Caused by lack of overall planning, this scheduling scheme often results in unbalanced occupancy time of the operating rooms. So we put forward a rolling horizon mixed integer programming model for the scheduling. Rolling horizon scheduling refers to a scheduling scheme in which cyclic surgical requests are taken into account. Surgical requests are updated daily. The completed surgeries are eliminated, and new surgeries are added to the scheduling list. Conside… Show more

“…Patient arrivals are determined by many variables and are extremely unpredictable. However, research shows that machine learning algorithms can signifi cantly improve time prediction performance [19,25,28,38] and a number of proposed solutions is growing [7,14,24,26,41].…”

“…Xiang and Li [ 8 ] proposed and defined a short-term surgery scheduling problem to optimize OR management and reduce operation costs based on a survey of the OR operation in a typical hospital in China. Luo et al [ 9 ] proposed a rolling horizon mixed-integer programming model for scheduling. Considering the day-to-day demand for surgery, they developed a nonrolling scheduling model (NRSM) and a rolling horizon scheduling model (RSM) to balance the occupancy time among operating rooms.…”

“…To adapt to the changing waiting list we apply a rolling horizon scheduling approach. In the literature, daily rescheduling with a rolling horizon model produces less OR idle time and increases utilisation compared to a non-rolling horizon model (Luo et al, 2016). In their recent review of OT planning and scheduling, Zhu et al (2018) indicate that there is a definite need for longer-term (several weeks) scheduling approaches (as opposed to daily approaches) that incorporate volatility.…”
