A method for determining the polarization state of the metal with the middle potential in order to calculate the corrosion rate of multi‐metals complicated galvanic couple

Abstract: A method based on the mixed potential theory is put forward to determine the polarization state of the metal with the middle potential in tri‐metals galvanic couple. The potential distribution and current density distribution of the complicated galvanic couple composed of AA5083, 20# steel, and H62 copper alloy were simulated by finite element method, and the effect of configuration position on the complicated galvanic corrosion behavior was studied, which was verified by the galvanic current measurement. “…Therefore, Zn is added to the filler metal [22]. However, increasing the Zn content of the Al alloy also increases the corrosion current density of the filler metal [23,24], which can affect the corrosion behavior of the Al heat exchanger in the tri-metallic galvanic couple [25]. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the effect of corrosion current density when designing SACP.…”

“…Thus, the effect of different tri-metal galvanic couplings on the corrosion reliability should be considered for designing Al fin-tube heat exchangers. Generally, in tri-metal galvanic couples that include three metals (A 1 , A 2 , and A 3 ) with different corrosion potentials in the order of E A1 > E A2 > E A3 , the polarization of the middle potential metal (E A2 ) can be defined by the mixed potential theory [25,26]. If the tri-metal galvanic coupled metals (A 1 , A 2 , and A 3 ) comply with the Tafel system (a linear system), the polarization state of the middle potential metal can be determined by the Tafel superposition relation.…”
