A Method for Colletotrichum graminicola Inoculation in Maize Stalks

Abstract: Anthracnose stalk rot (ASR) disease caused by Colletotrichum graminicola can lead to major corn yield losses in Brazil. Studies on plant resistance and genetic variation in pathogen populations are required towards the development of ASR disease management strategies. However, the lack of adequate methods for C. graminicola inoculation in maize stalk has hindered these efforts. The main objective of the study was to develop a confident and feasible method for C. graminicola inoculation into maize stalk. Three … Show more

“…Several studies show that the employment of SADs makes it possible to study the genotype reaction to the different diseases and the selection of resistance sources in the development of new crops (Poltronieri et al, 2016;Aktar & Shamsi, 2018). Attained estimates from the SADs also serve as subside for the definition of pathogen inoculation methods (Parreira et al, 2016) and to quantify the efficiency of disease control methods (Marcuzzo et al, 2016).…”

“…Inoculation with C. graminicola using the method of Parreira et al (2016) successfully induced infection and disease in maize stalks. In control plants, the insertion of sterile toothpicks without inoculum did not cause lesions in the stalks or vascular tissues, thus, allowing plants to grow and develop normally throughout their life cycle.…”
