A meta-analysis of exercise interventions among people treated for cancer

Abstract: In the article "A Meta-Analysis of Exercise Interventions among People Treated for Cancer," incorrect quality of life results were reported due to a coding error of baseline values for one primary study. The error affected quality of life outcome data for the treatment group baseline versus post intervention comparison and for the control group baseline versus outcome comparison. The corrected data appear in the tables below. One article sentence should be corrected (p. 705): The original sentence was "All ESs… Show more

“…Using database searches of PubMed and Embase, a literature review up to December 2008 was performed, limited to studies in English, German, French and Dutch languages. In addition, bibliographies of previous review articles about exercise and cancer were examined [4,6,19,30,31,42,50] . The search combined key words related to cancer (oncology, neoplasm, tumour, malignancy), cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, hormonal therapy) and exercise (exercise training, training, physical activity, rehabilitation, resistance training, aerobic training, strength training, lifestyle, endurance, resistance).…”

“…Physical exercise offers an intervention that provides symptom relief for depression in cancer survivors(145 Fleishman, 2004). Several meta-analytic studies in this context concerning depression and cancer have shown moderate to large effects sizes(146,147,148,149, 150). Larger effects may be obtained for programs that were supervised or partially supervised, performed outside the home environment, and taking up at least 30 minutes in duration(151).Those results complemented other studies showing that exercise is associated with reduced pain and fatigue and with improvements in quality of life among cancer survivors (152, 153, 154).…”
