The slag entrapment process under two different initial conditions during the end of casting in tundish is studied. A 3D multiphase mathematical model was developed to simulate the slag entrapment behaviour. The critical slag entrapment time (t s ) and the corresponding critical slag entrapment height (h cs ) were predicted. The results show the h cs increases, the t s decreases as the casting speed increases, but their relationships are not linear. The influence of casting speed on the h cs in the range of 1.25-1.5 m min −1 is higher than other ranges. The h cs simulated from the steady flow field is higher than that from the static state. When the casting speed is 1.50 m min −1 , the difference between the h cs calculated from two different initial conditions is the largest, reaching 9.83 mm (8.42%). The numerical simulation results are verified by a 1:2 scaled water model.

Genetic algorithm is widely used in multi-objective mechanical structure optimization. In this paper, a genetic algorithm-based optimization method for ladle refractory lining structure is proposed. First, the parametric finite element model of the new ladle refractory lining is established by using ANSYS Workbench software. The refractory lining is mainly composed of insulating layer, permanent layer and working layer. Secondly, a mathematical model for multi-objective optimization is established to reveal the functional relationship between the maximum equivalent force on the ladle lining, the maximum temperature on the ladle shell, the total mass of the ladle and the structural parameters of the ladle refractory lining. Genetic algorithm translates the optimization process of ladle refractory lining into natural evolution and selection. The optimization results show that, compared with the unoptimized ladle refractory lining structure (insulation layer thickness of 0 mm, permanent layer thickness of 81 mm, and working layer thickness of 152 mm), the refractory lining with insulation layer thickness of 8.02 mm, permanent layer thickness of 76.20 mm, and working layer thickness of 148.61 mm has the best thermal insulation performance and longer service life within the variation of ladle refractory lining structure parameters. Finally, the results of the optimization are verified and analyzed in this paper. The study found that by optimizing the design of the ladle refractory lining, the maximum equivalent force on the ladle lining, the maximum temperature on the ladle shell and the ladle mass were reduced. The thermal insulation performance and the lightweight performance of the ladle are improved, which is very important for improving the service life of the ladle.

Numerical fluid simulations using the Reynolds stress model and water model experiments are conducted to test different designs of tundish turbulence inhibitors (A, B, C, D, and E) for their effectiveness in removing nonmetallic inclusions from steel. The results reveal a unique flow pattern, with a mushroom‐like shape forming around the entry jet. The acceleration of small eddies within this mushroom is a significant factor in inclusion removal. This discovery has practical implications for the steel industry, leading to a longer residence time in the entry jet mushroom and improved inclusion flotation performance. Additionally, the turbulent kinematic viscosity and Reynolds stress fields in the flow mushroom influence the tracer's local dispersion rate and the interactions of the inclusions in this region. These findings are further validated using a tundish water model to track the dynamics of amine particles injected into the ladle shroud, enhancing their practical relevance.
