Convinced that some recent trends in the literature concerned with reactions involving solids have been unproductive, even discouraging interest in the subject, this reviewer analyses the reasons and charts a way forward. In particular, two topics are discussed: thermal analysis and activation energy. Thermal analysis, automated collection and interpretation of kinetic data for solid(?)-state decompositions, resulted in huge numbers of publications between late 1970s and 2010. Measurements were frequently minimalistic (few, often no, confirmatory tests complemented rate data). Kinetic data interpretations were based on the Arrhenius activation model, inapplicable to these assumed, usually unconfirmed, solid-state(?) reactions. Energy distributions within crystalline reactants differ from those of 'free-flying' gaseous reactants, and thus, mechanistic proposals are entirely speculative. Such studies yielded little more than the reaction temperature: no meaningful insights into reaction chemistry, controls, mechanisms. Despite my several highly critical articles, these inconsequential studies continued. Overall, this now sidelined topic impacted adversely on solid-state chemistry, activation energy, E. Concurrently with the above studies, L'vov published a theoretical explanation for the magnitude of E: the Congruent Dissociative Volatilisation (CDV), thermochemical approach. This was also ignored by the 'Thermoanalytical Community', possibly because it assumes an initial volatilisation step: it appears that many solid-state scientists are prejudiced against mechanisms involving a phase change. The value of this novel theory (CDV) in identifying controls and mechanisms of solid-state reactions is discussed here. This review is positive: an interesting branch of main-stream chemistry remains open for exploration, expansion, explanation and exploitation! BACKGROUND Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) cannot degrade completely emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides. The release of such contaminants through WWTP effluents or sludge disposal is of high environmental concern. Hydrothermal treatment has been adopted as alternative treatment technology for sludge to recover energy and valuable products. This study demonstrates the removal of inherent concentration levels of organic pollutants from the previous classes under variable reaction conditions, i.e. temperature, reaction time and sludge‐to‐water (%wt) ratio. RESULTS Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to model removal efficiency for the sum of detected pharmaceutical compounds and to evaluate the significant operational parameters. The results showed that higher values of temperature and time enhanced the percent degradation efficiency while sludge‐to‐water (%wt) ratio was not a significant factor affecting the removal process. The maximum removal efficiency of pharmaceutical residues reached 89.8% under the following conditions: 220 °C, 360 min reaction time, 7.50%wt sludge‐to‐water ratio. Additionally, hydrothermal treatment removed completely trace levels of detected pesticides, regardless of the applied conditions. RSM was also applied separately to those pharmaceuticals (i.e., amisulpride and amitriptyline) detected most frequently and at higher concentrations in sludge samples. Both compounds have been degraded at >90% using reaction temperatures from 205 to 220 °C and reaction time between 297 and 360 min with 7.5% sludge/H2O ratio. CONCLUSION Hydrothermal treatment is a suitable and promising technology for sewage sludge treatment for the efficient destruction of organic pollutants and the production of renewable hydrochars. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

In this study, the goal was to find lower temperature for separating the Zn and Fe content of ZnFe2O4 by sulfation reaction than previously achieved, and to study the various reactions steps of sulfation. Hence, the reaction of ZnFe2O4 with Mohr's salt containing iron(II), i.e. (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2•6H2O, and ammonium iron alum containing Fe(III), i.e. NH4Fe(SO4)2•12H2O was studied. At first the thermal decomposition of precursor salts in air was studied by TG/DTA-MS to find the proper temperature for sulfation. Then ZnFe2SO4:precursor salt mixtures with ratios 1:2 and 1:5 were prepared and annealed at 400, 425, 450 °C. The solubility of the products obtained at different annealing temperatures in water (e.g. ZnSO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3) and in HCl (Fe2O3, ZnO, Fex(OH)ySO4, Znv(OH)wSO4 basic sulfates) was studied. The morphology and structure of the starting materials was investigated by SEM, XRD and FTIR, the crystalline phases after each annealing and washing steps were studied by XRD.
