A mathematical model for pollution in a river and its remediation by aeration

Abstract: a b s t r a c tWe present a simple mathematical model for river pollution and investigate the effect of aeration on the degradation of pollutant. The model consists of a pair of coupled reaction-diffusion-advection equations for the pollutant and dissolved oxygen concentrations, respectively. The coupling of these equations occurs because of reactions between oxygen and pollutant to produce harmless compounds. Here we consider the steady-state case in one spatial dimension. For simplified cases the model is so… Show more

“…Rivers also serve as the main sources of municipal, agricultural and industrial water for residents living in the basin. However, river pollution by increasing untreated or partly treated wastewater is threatening human health and ecological systems worldwide ( Pimpunchat et al, 2009 ) . This situation is more serious in developing countries owing to rapid industrialization and urbanization ( Su et al, 2011) .…”

“…Diante disso, a poluição dos cursos hídricos é um dos problemas mais sérios de poluição nos dias atuais, causando a morte de aproximadamente 25 milhões de pessoas todos os anos (PIMPUNCHAT et al, 2009). Na busca por resoluções eficientes para esses problemas ambientais, os gestores se deparam com um número crescente de tecnologias potencias e programas de modelagem.…”

“…Many mathematical models have been developed to help the conservation and preservation of water in a given locality. For instance, a study carried out on Tha Chin river stream in Thailand, which considered the effect of substances contaminated with dissolved oxygen [5]. This study proposed the model of two-dimensional coupled advection-dispersion equations for both state variables, respectively.…”
