ABSTRACT:The main contribution of this research is to optimize the operating conditions of an anaerobic reactor applied to the treatment of wastewater from cassava starch production. A 20-L anaerobic reactor was used, operating in a batch system, with temperature control. Temperature and inoculum total volatile solids (TVSi) were controlled for evaluation of effects on the removals of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and reactor total volatile solids (TVSr) by means of a Central Composite Rotational Design (CCRD). Twelve trials were analyzed simultaneously by the desirable function approach. The higher COD removal (96.82%) was obtained at 42 °C and 12.0% TVSi. The largest TVSr removal (69.31%) was registered at 45 °C and 10.0% TVSi. Equations representative of the process were obtained from the responses of variables, being statistically significant at a 90% confidence level. Based on the desirability function approach, we can conclude that an optimal operational condition for the anaerobic reactor is at 39.7 °C and 10.8% TVSi. The estimated COD and TVSr removal efficiencies under these operating conditions were 90.45% and 63.12%, respectively.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity and color of wastewater from a pig slaughterhouse and packing plant through the electrochemical technique and to optimize the ΔV (electric potential difference) and HRT (hydraulic retention time) variables in an electrocoagulation batch reactor using aluminum electrodes. The experimental design used was rotatable central composite design. For turbidity, the values for removal efficiency obtained varied from 92.85% to 99.28%; for color, they varied from 81.34% to 98.93% and for COD, they varied from 58.61% to 81.01%. The best optimized conditions of treatment were at 25 min for the HRT and 25 V for the ΔV, which correspond to electrical current of 1.08 A and a current density of 21.6 mA cm. The aluminum residue varied from 15.254 to 54.291 mg L and the cost of the treatment was US$4.288 m. The novelty of the work was the simultaneous optimization of three response variables using the desirability function applied to the treatment of wastewater from slaughterhouses.
a b s t r a c tThe aim of this paper was to evaluate the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, color, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) of effluents from a pig slaughterhouse and packing plant by the electrocoagulation/organic coagulation combination, and optimize the electrical current, hydraulic retention time (HRT), and concentration of tannin-based coagulant in a batch reactor. The electrocoagulation treatment system consists of a batch reactor with aluminum sacrificial electrodes, organic coagulant, and the effluent to be treated. The electrodes were connected to a direct current source. The adopted experimental design was a rotatable central composite design. For the color, the removal efficiency values ranged from 93.45% to 97.82%; turbidity ranged from 85.53% to 98.37%; COD ranged from 57.89% to 64.73%; and TKN ranged from 11.48% to 65.57%. Mathematical models were obtained for color and turbidity removal. In the calculation of the desirability function, the optimized treatment conditions were 10 min for the HRT and 0.68 A for electrical current, corresponding to a current density of 13.6 mA cm -2 and a concentration of 0.775 mL L -1 for the tannin-based coagulant. The residual aluminum ranged from 0 to 2.11 mg L -1 and the cost of treatment was 1.08 US$ m -3.
