Abstract:The results of the latest bathymetric survey of 21 lakes in the Suwałki Landscape Park (SLP) are presented here. Measurements of the underwater lake topography were carried out in the years 2012-2013 using the hydroacoustic method (sonar Lawrence 480M). In the case of four lakes (Błędne, Pogorzałek, Purwin, Wodziłki) this was the first time a bathymetric survey had been performed. Field material was used to prepare bathymetric maps, which were then used for calculating the basic size and shape parameters of the lake basins. The results of the studies are shown against the nearly 90 year history of bathymetric surveying of the SLP lakes. In the light of the current measurements, the total area of the SLP lakes is over 634 hm 2 and its limnic ratio is 10%. Lake water resources in the park were estimated at 143 037.1 dam 3 . This value corresponds to a retention index of 2257 mm. In addition, studies have shown that the previous morphometric data are not very accurate. The relative differences in the lake surface areas ranged from -14.1 to 9.1%, and in the case of volume -from -32.2 to 35.3%. Aims: The present study aimed at a morphological characterization of 18 lakes of the municipalities of Cidreira, Balneário Pinhal and Palmares do Sul, situated in the northern and middle coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methods: The morphometric survey was conducted in the summer of 2011/2012, based on echo sounder coupled with GPS and the application of remote sensing and GIS procedures. The morphometric parameters used for the characterization were: surface area, perimeter, perimeter development, volume, relative fetch, maximum depth, average depth, relative depth, median depth of volume, length and width. The statistical interpretation included Test of Normality, Coefficient of Variation, Correlation and Regression Analysis, Cluster Analysis, Discriminant Analysis and Principal Component Analysis. Results: Eighteen lakes were described and five of them are presented by aerial photo and bathymetric map. They represent the proposed morphological lake types. The calculation of the coefficient of variation revealed larger amplitudes of parameters related to lake size than to depth. The application and interpretation of cluster analysis, confirmed by discriminant analysis, distinguished those lakes in five morphological groups, which differ mainly by size and subsequently by depth. The Principal Component Analysis identified the first component with positively charged variables of size and negatively charged relative depth, and a second component with positive charge of maximum and average depths. Conclusions: The low relative depths and the exposure to constant northeastern winds reduce the transparency of the lakes. Consequently, they are light limited by suspension of inorganic and organic matter. A property that limits the application of trophic state indices. The high dynamic of the water bodies produces an oxygenated sediment surface that facilitates the settlement by aerobic organisms all over the bottom area. The shallowness and the low median depths of volume are limiting factors for sustainable water supply management. The morphological characteristics of the coastal lakes make very difficult an accurate ecological assessment based on usual trophic state criterions and a sustainable water resource management using general guidelines.Keywords: coastal lakes, morphology, coastal plain, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.Resumo: Objetivos: O presente estudo teve como objetivo a caracterização morfológica de 18 lagoas costeiras dos municípios de Cidreira, Balneário Pinhal e Palmares do Sul, no Litoral Norte e Médio do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. RESUMENEl lago de Zirahuén se localiza en la porción centro-norte del estado de Michoacán, dentro de la región hidrológica de la cuenca del Balsas, a 2075 m s.n.m. Es un lago monomíctico, oligotrófico, de tipo endorréico y posee una profundidad máxima de 43 m. Se describe la flora y la vegetación acuáticas del lago, representada por 35 familias, 55 géneros y 93 especies, de las cuales 27 son tolerantes, 42 subacuáticas y 24 acuáticas estrictas. Las formas de vida corresponden a los tipos de enraizadas emergentes, enraizadas sumergidas, enraizadas de hojas flotantes y libremente sumergidas. La vegetación se encuentra distribuida a lo largo de la línea de costa, presentándose a partir de las zonas de inundación temporal y en algunos casos hasta los 12 m de profundidad a manera de individuos aislados. Actualmente la cuenca y el lago muestran signos de deterioro, ocasionados por la explotación irracional de sus recursos, por lo que es urgente tomar las medidas necesarias a corto, mediano y largo plazo, para su conservación.Palabras clave: distribución de hidrófitas, flora y vegetación acuática, Zirahuén. ABSTRACT Lake Zirahuen is located in the north central area of Michoacan state, within the hydrological region of the Balsas basin, at 2075 m above sea level. The lake is monomictic, oligotrophic, endorreic and has a maximum depth of 43 m. The flora and the aquatic vegetation are described. Of the 93 species (55 genera, 35 families) that occur, 27 are tolerant, 42 subaquatic and 24 are strictly aquatic. Plant communities are comprised of hydrophytes that are attached emergent, attached submerged, floating leaved and free submerged. The aquatic vegetation is distributed along the lake shore, extending from the regions of temporary flooding to areas of open water 12 m deep. At present both, the Acta Botanica Mexicana 68: 1-38 (2004) 2 catchment basin and the lake itself are showing signs of ecological degradation due to the intensive exploitation of its resources. Both short and long-term strategies need to be developed to stem further degradation of the lake.
