A magnetic study of the one dimensional Sr $\mathsf{_{3}}$ NiIrO $\mathsf{_{6}}$ compound

Abstract: The magnetic properties of a polycrystalline Sr3NiIrO6 sample have been investigated by means of susceptibility and magnetization measurements. On the one hand, it is found that this compound, made of magnetic chains on a triangular lattice, behaves very similarly to Ca3CoRhO6 and Ca3CoIrO6. In particular, at low temperature (T Show more

“…III B. At this point, we note that a coercive field μ 0 H c ≈ 22 T was measured by another group in polycrystalline samples of Sr 3 NiIrO 6 at T = 15 K [17]. This is similar to the values observed in our single-crystal samples at 15 K [see Fig.…”

“…III B below, the samples used in the current study behave in a very similar way.) However, no heat capacity signature of the magnetic ordering has been observed in either Sr 3 NiIrO 6 or Sr 3 CoIrO 6 , suggesting a gradual onset of partially disordered magnetism [16,17]. Moreover, no structural change was seen at either T 1 or T 2 [13,15].…”

“…3, are consistent with an easy axis of anisotropy along c. A non linearity of the magnetization isotherm manifests itself at 15 K for H c. At 5 T under these conditions, the magnetization reaches a value of 0.25 µ B /f.u. This announces a step in the magnetization process which was observed by Flahaut et al in high field magnetization measurements 9 . In Co compounds with ferromagnetic intrachain interactions, this magnetization step corresponds to 1/3 of the saturated magnetization 15,16 .…”

“…Below T 2 , the temperature of spin freezing at magnetic fields lower than 1 T, a frozen PDA state (F-PDA) with very slow dynamics of spins was discussed: T 2 ∼ 30 K for Ca 3 3,12 which are accompanied by the parallel orientation of spins inside individual domains and the movement of domain walls within the material. In a constant external magnetic field this domain switching is thermally activated and can be studied by measuring the magnetization as a function of time at temperatures close to T 2 .…”
