Magnetic order in the frustrated Ising-like chain compoundSr3NiIrO6

Abstract: We have studied the field and temperature dependence of the magnetization of single crystals of Sr3NiIrO6. These measurements evidence the presence of an easy axis of anisotropy and two anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility. Neutron powder diffraction realized on a polycrystalline sample reveals the emergence of magnetic reflections below 75 K with magnetic propagation vector k ∼ (0, 0, 1), undetected in previous neutron studies [T.N. Nguyen and H.-C zur Loye, J. Solid State Chem., 117, 300 (1995)]. The nat… Show more

“…Moreover, no structural change was seen at either T 1 or T 2 [13,15]. In conjunction with the magnetization results, neutronscattering data for the low-temperature phases of Sr 3 NiIrO 6 and Sr 3 CoIrO 6 have been interpreted either in terms of amplitude-modulated antiferromagnetism or as a partiallydisordered antiferromagnetic (PDA) state [15,16]. Such PDA states, proposed by Mekata [24], were first reported for the A 3 BB O 6 family in Ref.…”

“…However, no heat capacity signature of the magnetic ordering has been observed in either Sr 3 NiIrO 6 or Sr 3 CoIrO 6 , suggesting a gradual onset of partially disordered magnetism [16,17]. Moreover, no structural change was seen at either T 1 or T 2 [13,15]. “…This compound, where Ni and Ir are magnetically active, presents many similarities with Ca 3 Co 2 O 6 , with the spin-orbit anisotropy and the triangular arrangement in antiferromagnetically coupled chains, possibly at the origin of a loss of long-range ordering with decreasing temperature [8]. The most striking feature observed in Sr 3 NiIrO 6 is the largest coercive field anisotropy (55 T) measured to date [9].…”
