A Low Cost Induction Motor Controller for Light Electric Vehicles in Local Areas

Abstract: Abstract-This paper is concerned with design considerations and tradeoffs involved in the power electronics development for light electric vehicles. A review of propulsion system design, power conversion structure and control is presented. A three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor is used as propulsion system for an electric scooter. The motor is controlled at different operating conditions by means of a simple scalar control using a low cost controller board developed for light electric vehicles used in loc… Show more

“…The EV performance characteristics such as acceleration, passing ability, gradeability and maximum speed are steadfastly relying on the speed-torque and power characteristics of the EMs [127,128]. The EM is selected by comparing their features such as starting Torque, power output, efficiency, ease of control, size, cost, noise, life and maintenance [129,130].…”

“…As a viable solution for complete elimination of the complex combustion engine with fuel oil together, high torque electric motor is crucially necessary due to economic imperatives. Meanwhile, surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) [18][19] has been developed that has completely eliminated CE and the use of fuel oil from HES, thus pure electric scooter vehicle (ESV) in the following scooters: Kingday electric scooters, Aima electric scooters, Mobility electric scooter and Terra motors with operating ranges between 35-60 km/hr and power output of 3kW-5kW respectively. However, the torque capability of the motor operates at low speed range thus, the continuous search for a high torque motors for high performance suitable for long distance travels.…”
