A Long-Term Analysis of the Possibility of Water Recovery for Hydroponic Lettuce Irrigation in Indoor Vertical Farm. Part 1: Water Recovery from Exhaust Air

Abstract: This paper presents the characteristics of the operation of the system for recovery of water from exhaust air in moderate climates in the years 2012–2019. The proposed system for water recovery uses the phenomenon of condensation in a cross-flow heat exchanger operating as an element of the air conditioning system. The parameters of exhaust air behind the heat exchanger have been determined using a mathematical model of the so-called black box. The mathematical model considers the risk of the cross-freezing of… Show more

“…As is well-known, in hydroponic greenhouses, it is very important to maintain suitable indoor environmental conditions to maximize the development of crops. The authors of [74], in a greenhouse in Poland for lettuce crops, designed a system to recover water from exhaust air. This water-recovery system exploits condensation in a crossflow heat exchanger operating within an air-conditioning system that maintains the required air parameters.…”

“…The results are presented in Table 4. The outdoor air parameters t 1i = 30 • C and RH 1i = 45% are assumed to be representative for temperate European climate conditions [22]. Regarding these parameters, the temperature obtained by DPIEC 1, DPIEC 2, and DPIEC 3 is 20.8, 19.0, and 19.7 • C, respectively.…”
