Technologies to Optimize the Water Consumption in Agriculture: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Agriculture is facing several very important challenges. Population growth means that more food must be produced to meet nutritional needs. However, this is putting excessive pressure on natural resources, such as water and land, which are heavily used for agricultural practices. For these reasons, we carried out a systematic review of existing studies in the scientific literature to better understand how innovative strategies can decrease water consumption in agriculture. It was performed following PRISMA gui… Show more

“…Remote sensing plays a vital role in modern agriculture since it can effectively provide and improve food security and sustainable crop growth by monitoring the quality and quantity of crops. Moreover, the application of remote sensing, especially in its water-related contexts, has the potential to furnish sustainable resolutions for addressing the imminent challenge of irrigation water scarcity [31]. The infrastructure of these systems is wireless sensor networks.…”

“…However, the energy requirements for running these automated and monitoring systems should be noted. While they may optimize water and nutrient use, they also require a continuous power supply, which could increase the operation's carbon footprint if the energy is sourced from non-renewable resources [82,83].…”

“…It should be emphasized that in this methodology, the water consumption of a crop over 30 years of the study is considered unchanged, although, because of technological evolutions and the link between water consumption and agriculture strategies, the water consumption by a crop may vary from year to year [31].…”
