“…Fatigue fracture of tough hydrogels, however, has remained unexplored. This lack of information on fatigue fracture of tough hydrogels hinders their further development, knowing that fatigue fracture is a critical mode of failure of all other tough materials, including metals, plastics, elastomers and composites [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34].…”

“…Nevertheless, NR is often used in engineering applications for its great properties in fatigue such as long fatigue life, even at large strain. [9][10][11] The mechanical properties of NR in fatigue have been thoroughly studied, [12][13][14][15] but studies on the evolution of SIC during fatigue testing of NR are very rare, even though it is often accepted that its remarkable macroscopic fatigue properties are closely related to SIC (see, for example, Saintier et al 16 for the effect of positive loading ratio). This lack of investigation is mainly due to the typical frequencies of fatigue tests (1 Hz or more), which are not compatible with the long time acquisition required by X-ray diffraction measurements (from a few seconds to an hour).…”

“…Basicamente, a análise de falha de um componente estrutural pode ser dividida em duas etapas: nucleação de uma trinca e propagação da trinca [1]. Atribui-se à mecânica do dano o estudo da primeira etapa, a nucleação da trinca, enquanto que a mecânica da fratura avalia a etapa de propagação da trinca até sua ruptura total.…”
