A Legibility Study of Chinese Character Complicacy and Eye Movement Data

Abstract: This study investigated the correlations between the complicacy and legibility of Chinese characters by using eye tracking analyzed with structural equation modeling. 13 university students, 6 men and 7 women, with a mean age of 21 yr. (SD = 1.7) participated. The results indicated that block types affected legibility and that saccade amplitude, number of fixations, and complicacy differed due to diverse character structures. Structural Equation Modeling showed that the number of strokes, number of nodes, and … Show more

“…Future studies should consider the following issues. First, the e ects of visual complexity with regard to character size should be examined, because a previous study found that the di culty of the optotypes used on eye charts in uences the variation in viewing distance (Ma & Chuang, 2015). Although the current study referred to previous studies (e.g., Peli, Burns, Farell, & Moor-Page, 2006;Wang, He, & Legge, 2014;Wang, He, & Legge, 2018) and calculated the perimetric complexity of each character (Endnotes: Fig.…”

“…Despite the availability of many eye tracker publications over the past two decades, there is still little information available on the interrelationship among eye movement parameters. Previously, Ma & Chuang ( 38 ) investigated the correlations between the Chinese characters stroke complicacy and eye movement parameters by utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM). However, the path coefficient was found low (β: 0.17) and the loading factor of saccade amplitude was less than 0.70 (p-value < 0.10) indicating that saccade amplitude was a not a strong predictor for eye movement parameters in the model (Figure 1).…”
