A large TPC prototype for a linear collider detector

Abstract: A Time Projection Chamber (TPC), operated in a detector at a future linear e + e − collider, will require a significantly advanced readout concept compared to the traditional pad-wire-based systems used previously. The LCTPC collaboration studies the prospects of TPC readout systems based on Micro Pattern Gas Detectors, namely GEMs and Micromegas, in combination with pads or a CMOS on the underlying anode plane. In small TPC prototype chambers, resolutions of better than σ ⊥ = 100 µm were demonstrated for drif… Show more

“…It is essentially a precisely aligned double-mesh layer with an embedded insulating spacer in-between, to be referred to as the gating foil hereafter in the present paper. The gating foil with a frame can be mounted on top of the amplification GEM stack or Micromegas, with either ordinary pad readout or pixel readout [23,24], just like an additional ordinary GEM foil, thereby realizing a wire-less gas amplification device for TPCs with ion-blocking capability 7 .…”

“…An alternative which is being studied intensely is the use of micro-pattern gas detectors as readout systems in a TPC [54]. Gas electron multipliers (GEM) [55,56] or Micro Mesh Chambers Micromegas (MM) [57,58] are two recent technologies under investigation.…”

“…Since the end of 2008, the LCTPC collaboration operates the LP, a prototype for the ILD TPC at DESY [128]. It consists of a field cage with a diameter of 75 cm and a length of about 56 cm.…”
