A Key Performance Indicator to Assess the Frequency Stability of Wind Generation Dominated Power System

Abstract: High penetration of power electronic interfaced generation, like wind power, has an essential impact on the inertia of the interconnected power system. It can pose a significant threat to the frequency stability. This paper introduces the notion of the key performance indicator (KPI) and illustrates its application on large scale power systems, including Fast Frequency Response (FFR) and a high share of wind power, to measure the possible distance to the frequency stability limit. The proposed KPI estimates th… Show more

“…Frequency stability is the ability of a power system to maintain steady-state frequency, following a severe system disturbance, resulting in a significant imbalance between generation and load [1]- [4]. It depends on the ability to restore the equilibrium between system generation and load demand with minimum loss of loads.…”

“…The concept of a virtual synchronous generator has been proposed to improve the frequency stability in a power system with high IBDG penetration [8]. In [9], a key performance indicator was proposed to measure the frequency stability limit in a system with high penetration of power-electronic-interfaced generators. This study improved the frequency nadir (NADIR) using the fast frequency response of wind turbine generators.…”
