A keratoprosthesis successfully implanted in the cornea of a rabbit, a SEM-study

Abstract: By means of a new fixation technique keratoprostheses were fixed in the cornea of 'Hollander' rabbits. The fixation is based on the use of corneo-sclerally orientated stainless steel-vanadium traction threads in corneal stroma and scleral tissue. Keratoprostheses placed according to this fixation technique have a follow-up of a maximum of two years. The liquid sealing capacity, the cell behaviour on the surface of the prosthesis and the anchoring of the stainless steel vanadium wire have been investigated in d… Show more

“…In area B no fibre structure existed yet; a large number of fibrils had assumed a certain main direction without the formation of actual fibres. This is comparable to the initial deposition of fibres onto the PMMA-surface of a keratoprosthesis on the epithelial side of the cornea [1].…”

“…Worst). The thin, 50 pm dia., wire is highly flexible and is used in I.O.L.-implantation, as well as in keratoprothesis fixation and standard wound closure, with success [6]. The aim of this investigation was to study experimentally the acceptance of the stainless steel-vanadium material by the cornea of the rabbits and its acceptance by a human cornea when used as a fixation suture for an I.O.L.…”
