Soemmering's ring, an aspect of secondary cataract: A morphological description by SEM

Abstract: A Soemmering's ring attached to a patient's I.O.L. was removed and processed for SEM-examination. The enveloping structure of the Soemmering's ring was clearly of capsular origin, adherent along a single line and forming an envelope around the inner material. The envelope had a membranous character. The contents of the ring varied from the outside to the centre. Close to the capsule envelope a more or less amorphous material was found. Most of the contents of the ring was made up of lens-fibre material. Someti… Show more

“…Some of the recrystallization phenomena found at the cross-fracture of a Soemmering's ring [7] are similar to the recrystallization process found in the cataractous lenses. It is now known whether the local chemical environment inside the Soemmering's ring has led to these recrystallization phenomena.…”

“…Firstly, very soft material mainly consisting of cells (erythrocytes) originating from the operation and remnants of, often degenerated, lens-fibre material from the original lenscataract, as reported earlier [1][2][3][4]. Secondly, fragments of regenerated capsule epithelium, sometimes relatively large pieces, sometimes connected to pieces of rather solid lens-fibre material.…”

“…Secondary-cataract formation has been described by various authors in otherwise quiet eyes [1][2][3][4]. In these eyes many different products were found in the after-cataract material, e.g., remnants of lens fibres, spherical structures, sometimes with the appearance of a golfball, erythrocytes and a mucous substance.…”
