A Juvenile Case of Pulmonary Lymphangitic Carcinomatosis Caused by Sigmoid Colon Cancer with a Component of Micropapillary Carcinoma

Abstract: Micropapillary carcinoma is known to be associated with a poor prognosis and high propensity for lymphovascular invasion and lymph node metastasis. Case reports on colorectal micropapillary carcinoma are relatively rare. We report here a 26-year-old woman who had sigmoid colon cancer with a micropapillary component. We made the diagnosis of pulmonary lymphangitic carcinomatosis but could not identify the primary lesion. We gave her chemotherapy as an occult primary cancer. But her respiratory condition did not… Show more

“…Invasive micropapillary carcinoma arising in the colon has been for the first time been reported by Sakamoto et al [7]. To date, the majority of reported cases are single case report [8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15]. However, there are only a few reports on a large scale clinicopathological study of colon cancer with MPP [16,17,18,19,20].…”

“…Beginning in 2005, several case series and case reports were published on MP CRC, elucidating its clinical behaviour, genetic properties and prognosis. In general, this subtype of colorectal adenocarcinoma presents as locally advanced disease, displays a tendency towards lymphovascular invasion and lymph node metastasis and reportedly imparts a poor prognosis compared to conventional CRC .…”

“…This variant has also been reported in breast, bladder, lung, and prostate carcinomas [4]. Lymphangitic lung carcinomatosis from micropapillary colon adenocarcinoma has only been previously reported in an autopsy case [3].…”
