Resumo: O assentamento de populações de origens germânicas no sul do Brasil é largamente dependente da colonização das orestas meridionais do bioma Mata Atlântica. Embora este seja um fato fundamental da história das colonizações do território brasileiro, poucas foram as análises dirigidas no sentido de se historiar a memória do espaço orestal em questão. Logo, este texto objetiva através de documentos como diários de imigrantes/descendentes, relatos de viajantes, literatura e outros, vislumbrar a oresta teuto-brasileira em torno da memória de Urwald, ou seja, enquanto uma construção socioambiental dos teuto-brasileiros desde o século XIX. Entre os teuto-brasileiros se veri ca, frequentemente, a existência de uma memória orestal largamente conectada às ideias dos riscos, sacrifícios, superações e vitórias sobre o ambiente da mata; igualmente tal memória tangencia as experiências orestais dos atores migrantes ainda na dimensão da oresta centro-europeia. Este artigo explorará tais questões, no sentido de se erigir uma discussão acerca da memória do Urwald por meio de um exemplo concreto, solidi cado em torno da Picada Essig, município de Travesseiro/RS, Brasil.

Memories of the Urwald in Southern Brazil: negotiations and risks of German-Brazilian forest colonizationAbstract: e settlement of German-rooted populations in Southern Brazil was largely dependent on the forest colonization of southern Mata Atlântica biome. Although this fact is a cornerstone to the history of colonization of the Brazilian territory, just a few analyzes were carried out in order to historicize the social memories attached to the forested space. erefore, this text seeks through di erent sources and documents like immigrants/descendants' diaries, literature, travelers' reports, and others, to glimpse the German-Brazilian forest around the memory of the Urwald, that is, while a socioenvironmental construction made by German-Brazilian communities since the nineteenth century. Among the German-Brazilians we o en observe the existence of a forest memory largely connected to the idea of risks, sacri ces, surmounting and victory over the forested environment; At the same time, such a memory is closely related to the migrants' forest experiences linked to the dimension of the central European forests. is paper wants to explore such questions aiming at erecting the discussion about the memory of the Urwald through a concrete example, the Picada Essig community, located in Travesseiro, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil.
