A Hybrid Expert System, GIS, and Simulation Modeling for Environmental and Technological Risk Management

Abstract: RTXPS, the RealTime eXPert System, integrates a forward chaining expert system and a backward chaining system into a DSS framework using simulation models and GIS for environmental and technological risk assessment and management tasks. The system operates in real-time, and uses time including estimates derived from the forecasting models, in its inference. The architecture features two linked ES strategies, which draw upon an object database of environmental and risk-relevant objects, including data acquisiti… Show more

“…EDSS analyzes and combines the heterogeneous multi-source data acquired from several different sensors sources and from the different processing subsystems within the MIS itself [13]. In order to properly detect and monitor oil slicks, issue alarms and support their management, advanced risk analysis models have been developed and applied for characterizing and monitoring the observed sites.…”

“…The system has to deal with all these kinds of knowledge for being effective and useful in the environmental management process (Cortes et al, 2000), which typically consists of four activities in the following: order hazard identification, risk assessment, risk evaluation and intervention (Fedra and Winkelbauer, 2002).…”

“…In several phases of the planning process, it is necessary to integrate the 3D planning model into its geographic context, the latter being provided by a GIS. Examples are visualizing the model for the purpose of stakeholder involvement, environmental impact studies, testing collisions with existing infrastructure, and updating a topographic information system after the completion of the structure (Fedra and Winkelbauer, 2002;Lopes and Dias, 2006;Carozza et al, 2014). Integrating the 3D model created by a parametric CAD system into a GIS means to transform both the geometry and the semantics into a data structure which can be interpreted by a GIS.…”
