Background: This article shares the results of research on educator perceptions of the nature and value of social emotional learning (SEL) skills undertaken in four African countries: Burkina Faso, South Africa, Togo and Uganda. Social emotional learning skills make up a large component of the ‘deep human skills’, which are important academic and workforce development skills.Objectives: Using samples of 50 Burkinabe, 68 South African and 32 Togolese and 66 Ugandan educators, this study describes the (1) SEL skills educators should be using to effectively teach their students and the (2) SEL skills the educators believe students should be using to be effective learners and successfully transition into the world of work.Method: Data collection methods include online and offline surveys, with the exception of Uganda that complemented their survey data with interviews. Thematic content analysis, using modified grounded theory, was used to analyse the data, as well as the qualitative data analysis software NVivo.Results: The results indicated seven common SEL themes shared across the four African countries. The SEL themes identified were consistent with the existing framework of Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) to some extent, especially around interpersonal relationships and decision-making skills.Conclusion: The findings indicate that the salience and importance of specific SEL skills varied based on the unique history and context of each country.

Bu araştırma ergenlerin gelecek beklentisi, umut ve psikolojik iyi oluş düzeyleri arasındaki yordayıcı ilişkileri ortaya koymak amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2019-2020 eğitimöğretim yılında Türkiye'nin çeşitli özel ve devlet liselerinde öğrenim görmekte olan 214 (%49.3) erkek, 208 (%50.7) kız öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 422 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada veri toplama araçları olarak; Psikolojik İyi Oluş Ölçeği, Ergen Gelecek Beklentileri Ölçeği, Sürekli Umut Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Aynı zamanda katılımcıların demografik özelliklerinin belirlemesi amacıyla kişisel bilgi formu kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde yapısal eşitlik modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre gelecek beklentisi ile umut değişkeni arasında pozitif yönde anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda ergenlerin geleceğe dair beklentileri arttıkça umut düzeyleri de artacaktır. Diğer yandan ergen gelecek beklentisi ile psikolojik iyi oluş değişkeni arasında pozitif yönde anlamlı ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Başka bir ifadeyle ergenlerin gelecek beklentileri arttıkça psikolojik iyi oluş düzeyleri de artacaktır. Ergenlerin umutları ile psikolojik iyi oluş düzeyleri arasında da pozitif yönde anlamlı ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Bu çerçevede ergen bireylerin umutları arttıkça psikolojik iyi oluş düzeylerinin de arttığı ortaya çıkmıştır. İçsel motivasyon kaynaklarını keşfederek geleceğe dair beklentilerini oluşturan ergenlerin, bu planlarının gerçekleşeceğine dair daha umut dolu oldukları görülmüştür. Gelecekten olumlu beklentiler içerisinde olan ve bu sayede yüksek umut düzeyine sahip ergenlerin ruh sağlığı ve psikolojik iyi oluş düzeyleri de pozitif yönde etkilenmektedir. Olumlu gelecek beklentisine sahip ergenlerin yaşamı daha anlamlı buldukları, iç kontrolü sağlayarak kararlarını alabildikleri ve kişiler arası ilişkilerde daha sıcak oldukları görülmüştür.

PurposeAlthough a burgeoning body of literature has established the influence of hope and employee creativity, the debate on the relative importance of hope and its components of pathway and agency on its outcomes has not been clarified. Literature has it that hope and its individual components of pathway and agency have a varying magnitude of influence on its outcomes. Some scholars argue that agency and pathway components better predict its outcomes than overall hope. The current study establishes the relative importance of hope and its components on creativity using evidence from Makerere University, Uganda.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted a cross-sectional quantitative survey design to collect data from the academic staff of Makerere University. The study used usefulness analysis to establish the relative importance of the predictor variables on the dependent variable.FindingsThe study findings revealed that agency and hope components of hope significantly predicted creativity. Overall, hope also significantly predicted creativity. Regarding relative importance, hope turned out to be the most “useful” predictor of creativity, followed by its components of agency and pathway.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was conducted in a public university setting located in urban areas. The findings may not be generalizable to private settings due to variations in the teacher's creative behaviour with variation in the creative environment. The study was also cross-sectional, which may not yield results of changing employee creativity over time. Further studies should establish the link between hope and creativity using a longitudinal survey to compare employee creativity using data collected at different intervals.Originality/valueThe value of the current study is both theoretical and empirical. Theoretically, the study findings enrich the hope theory by revealing the relative importance of hope on its outcomes over and above its components. The study also confirms the assertions of the dual pathway to creativity model by revealing that employees who are rich in hope components of agency and pathway have the cognitive flexibility to pursue creative goals and, when faced with failure, can generate alternative solutions to solve work problems.
