The implementation of green technologies, as part of retrofit, can significantly improve building performance. However, green technology selection is a complex decision making process due to multiple evaluation criteria and often conflicting interests of different stakeholders involved. This paper proposes default criteria weights based for previously-developed criteria tree consisting of in total 39 criteria organised around environmental, economic, social and technical performance of green technologies. Web-based surveys of experts including architects, engineers, planners in the UK and China were conducted to capture expert opinions on sustainability and technical criteria. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used to calculate default criteria weights. Comparisons between expert groups in different countries were also performed. Results show that UK experts more concern about Economic performance of green technology, specifically with UK architects and engineers assigning high weights on Cost. For the Environmental category, Reduction of energy consumption and Reduction of water consumption are ranked as the most important topics under In-use environmental performance by all experts. UK experts have shown a growing concern on Reduction of water consumption. Under The improvement of indoor environmental quality, Thermal comfort is ranked as the most important criterion by UK experts and Visual comfort is weighted as the first priority by Chinese experts. Compared with UK experts, Chinese experts have placed a significant importance on Technical criteria, represented by engineer group emphasising on Durability for this category.

In the actual context in which commercial industries need to achieve greater competitiveness through their processes, efficiency is required in the management of electricity. Commercial buildings need solutions that are adequate to their environment and that would mean economic benefits. Given the case in which a commercial building self-generates electricity from renewable energy sources (RES), methods are required for allowing evaluation of alternative sources for generation, taking into account both the RES and methods characteristic uncertainties, which are involved in the process of technology selection. This paper proposes a hybrid method composed by technics of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), the Theory Real Option Analysis (ROA), the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), and the Binomial Method (BM), to select the most adequate technologies for electricity self-generation in Shopping Centers (SCs); it takes into account economic, environmental, technological and technical criteria, within the Colombian regulatory framework. The case study was based on real data for SCs in three different Colombian cities with different meteorological conditions. It was demonstrated that taken into account the real options, the photovoltaic technologies are viable projects to be implemented in the commercial sector. The study is a conceptual contribution and it proposes a methodology for improving the understanding of the complex process of decision making with its application in the evaluation of RES technologies, considering the incentives and the implicit real options in the regulatory framework of a region or a country.Keywords: Uncertainty, self-generation in Shopping Centers, real options, AHP-TOPSIS, normative framework. Common terminology is essential for accurate communication among researchers, scientists, engineers, and other decision makers. To assist manufacturing process characterization, a common understanding of terminology is imperative for efficient and effective communication in industry; it can also facilitate automation and interoperability of software tools. Manufacturing process characterization enables the assessment and improvement of unit manufacturing processes, products, and systems from a sustainability perspective. To develop and implement sustainability-related standards and best practices in industry, naming conventions and definitions of common terms are needed. Presently, many terms used are ill-defined, vague, or overlap in meaning. Although there are ongoing standards efforts related to terminology identification and definition, an identified common set is yet to be developed. The objective of this work was to facilitate ongoing standards development efforts by harmonizing the varied array of terms used to describe production processes. As a result of a review of the literature, a concise set of 47 terms focusing on process characterization and able to describe sustainable production was generated; terms unique to individual production processes were omitted. The terms were organized into six categories to define the overarching concepts: Scope, Boundary, Material, Measurement, Model, and Flow. Definitions of the terms were then derived from the literature in sustainable manufacturing and chemical and process industries, process characterization and planning, organization standards, and life cycle assessment and management. The reported terms and definitions are not unique to sustainable production, and could foster widespread use of the concepts to improve the economic, environmental, and social performance of industry. In the future, the terminology described could be standardized through international standards organizations. Further, a rigorous review of research on manufacturing process characterization and process modeling in support of sustainable production is yet to be accomplished. Such a review would aid in organizing prior work by process type, perhaps by using a standard process taxonomy. Thus, a generalized, industry-relevant method for manufacturing process characterization could emerge to support sustainability assessment, and could be implemented through software applications accessible to a variety of users.
