A history of urine microscopy

Abstract: Abstract:The naked-eye appearance of the urine must have been studied by shamans and healers since the Stone Age, and an elaborate interpretation of so-called Uroscopy began around 600 AD as a form of divination. A 1000 years later, the first primitive monocular and compound microscopes appeared in the Netherlands, and along with many other objects and liquids, urine was studied from around 1680 onwards as the enlightenment evolved. However, the crude early instruments did not permit fine study because of chro… Show more

“…Quality of urine WBC and RBC counting methods slip method applied in routine practice due to its easy performance and long tradition of using in laboratories (2,9). Many laboratories still apply the non-standardised coverslip method with decanting supernatant after centrifugation and inserting the drop of sediment on the slide.…”

“…Manual urine sediment analysis was a gold standard in laboratory work for decades ( 3 , 4 ). In most laboratories, a bright-field microscopy of unstained centrifuged native urine is still a part of routine work.…”

“…In most laboratories, a bright-field microscopy of unstained centrifuged native urine is still a part of routine work. However, detailed protocols, especially in the preanalytical phase, slightly vary between laboratories ( 3 ). There is no reference method for urine sediment microscopy ( 1 , 4 ).…”

“…1 It was not until the 17th century that pioneering physicians began looking at urine under magnification, leading to the advent of urine microscopy. 2,3 The early microscopes were rudimentary with minimal magnification power, limiting the observer to visualizing larger structures such as crystals. Eventually, cells and casts (corpuscles and cylinders) could be identified.…”
