A Histopathological Study of Tumour and Non-Tumour Breast Lesions in Kolhan, Jharkhand

Abstract

BACKGROUNDThe objectives of the study are-1) To evaluate the histopathological findings of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of breast. 2) To correlate the clinico-radiological diagnoses and histopathological diagnoses. MATERIALS AND METHODSThe present study was conducted in the Pathology Department of MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand over a period of three years from January 2014 to December 2016. During this period, we have studied total 300 cases of breast lesions. Detailed gross examination of biopsy materials was done followed by fixation and tissue processing. Different lesions were studied by histopathological examination and reported. RESULTSOut of the 300 cases, 290 cases had neoplastic and 10 cases had non-neoplastic lesions. Out of the total 290 cases with neoplastic, 202 cases had benign breast tumours, 88 cases had malignant lumps. Fibroadenoma was the most common benign tumour with 147 cases. Invasive ductal carcinoma (NOS) was the most common malignant tumour with 73 cases. Most common nonneoplastic lesion was acute mastitis/abscess with 04 cases followed by duct ectasia and fibrocystic disease of breast. The tumours involved were in upper outer quadrant most frequently. The benign tumours were most frequent in 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th decades. The malignant tumours were seen beyond 4 th decade. CONCLUSIONHistopathological study is still gold standard, not only for its diagnostic role but also its prognostic value. It is also important in the management of breast lumps.
