A highly sensitive fluorescent probe for detection of hydrazine in gas and solution phases based on the Gabriel mechanism and its bioimaging

Abstract: A new probe 2-benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl-isoindole-1,3-dione (BTI) based on the Gabriel reaction was developed for hydrazine which shows promising selectivity towards hydrazine over other analytes.

“…Mahapatra and coworkers disclosed benzothiadiazole based probe 36 for the selective and sensitive detection of hydrazine based on Gabriel mechanism (Figure ). In H 2 O–DMSO (4:6, v/v, 10 mM HEPES buffer, pH 7.4) solution, only hydrazine induced turn on fluorescence responses at 498 nm, accompanied by the emission color changes from dark to bright green, which could be observed by the naked eye.…”

“…Moreover, based on 53 , an in vitro assay for aminoacylase‐1 has also been developed. Based on the recognition moiety of phthalimide and the sensing mechanism adapted from Gabriel reaction, several other fluorescent hydrazine probes have been designed by using several other fluorophore scaffolds (Figure ) including pyrazoline ( 54 ), benzothiadiazole ( 55 ), BODIPY ( 56 , 57 ), 4‐hydrazine‐naphthalimides ( 58 ), and fluorescein ( 59 )…”

“…Trace amount of hydrazine absorbed in human body can induce temporary blindness, irritation of nose, pulmonary enema, kidney damage, and undermine central nervous system. [9][10][11][12] On account of the considerable toxicological effects, hydrazine has been listed as one of the possible carcinogenic substances and its exposure threshold limit value (TLV) of 10 ppb was recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 13 Therefore, it is necessary to focus on the development of reliable, sensitive and convenient methods for the detection of hydrazine.…”
