A High-performance Tiered Storage System for a Global Spectrum Observatory Network

Abstract: Abstract-This paper describes the RF measurement storage and database architecture for long-term continuously running spectrum observatories in the US (at Chicago and Blacksburg) and in Turku, Finland. It also describes how the measurement band plan has been collaboratively created taking into account the specifications and limits of the receiving system. Collecting measurements from different geographical locations makes it possible to perform spatial and temporal analysis of the spectrum usage in different p… Show more

“…However, research efforts have been made in [8]- [13] ranging from field survey to protocol and model developments, to improve on spectrum utilization so that secondary use of radio spectrum is possible. Attard et al [14] provides occupancy rate of the spectrum band of 2.4 GHz using a cooperative sensing technique, with a combination of metrics such as AND, and OR on the measurement data to define the utilization of the spectrum. The low transmission power level results in the utilization of the spectrum being deeply dependent on the location of the measurement.…”

“…A spectrum observatory network was built in a GlobalRF Spectrum Opportunity Assessment project [86,87,88,89,90,91,92] in Wireless Innovation between Finland and the US (WiFiUS) program [93], which was jointly funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) [94] and Tekes [6]. The project built an international network of radio frequency (RF) spectrum observatories continuously collecting long-term spectrum data to study the trends in spectrum utilization and to identify frequency bands where spectrum sharing could be feasible.…”
