Power systems has been subjected to significant upgrades in terms of structure and capacity. Reliability evaluation of composite power systems has surfaced as an essential step in operation and planning stages of the modern power system. It is an effective tool to investigate the ability of power systems to supply customers with reliable power service. The purpose of this review is to enhance the knowledge of reliability studies conducted on composite power systems by providing a critical and systematic review. This work investigates peer-reviewed articles published between 2007 and 2017 in three reliable databases. The findings reveal that the reliability of composite power systems has received considerable attention over the last few years. Secondly, investigation studies demonstrated a crucial role in verifying the impact of adopting new technologies. Third, studies on this topic have been intensively conducted in Asia, which highlights the promising sectors in these regions. However, researchers have generally focused on developing several aspects (e.g., evaluation speed and wind power integration) at the expense of others (e.g., realistic studies and other renewable energy resources). The lack of practical applications is evident in the surveyed publications. These findings imply a potential incoordination between the needs of the real applications and researchers’ tendencies. Future reliability evaluation scholars are advised to consider the findings of this systematic review including concentrating on insufficiently covered topics and enhance the coordination among the efforts devoted in this area.

This paper presents a novel framework for the assessment of reliability and quality indices and the associated reserve levels in electric power systems. The developed technique takes into account the variations of demand and contingencies, which occur randomly, causing some units of generation, and/or transmission capacities to be lost. The evaluated reliability and quality measures, which are essential to assess the reserve capabilities of the power system for various operating scenarios, are probabilistic in nature. In fact, the value of demand levels, the capacity of the generation and transmission capacities are known with absolute certainty. The assessment of reliability and quality indices, in this paper, are subject to random variations and, consequently, as well as the calculated reliability indices are all subject to random variations where only expected values of these indices can be evaluated. This paper presents a novel assessment of the power system reserve-based on the reliability and quality levels. Practical applications are additionally exhibited, for demonstration purposes, to the Saudi electricity power networks.

Reliability and availability analyses are recognized as essential for guiding decision makers in the implementation of actions addressed to improve the technical and economical performance of complex systems. For industrial systems with reparable components, the most interesting parameter used to drive maintenance is the stationary availability. In this regard, the present paper proposes an exact formula for computing the system stationary availability of a k-out-of-n system. Such a formula is proved to be in agreement with the fundamental theorem of Markov chains. Then, a multiobjective mathematical model is formulated for choosing the optimal system configuration design. The Pareto front is developed using the Lexicographic Goal Programming (LGP) method, and the TOPSIS method is successively implemented to choose the k-out-of-n configuration that represents the best compromise between the considered objective functions. A numerical example is provided.
