The science of haptics has received a great attention in the last decade in the field of simulation and training. In particular, haptics can be introduced as a novel technology to make students feel sensations not directly experienceable in the real world and typically only reported as notions in textbooks. In this work, we present a haptically-enhanced framework for the tactile exploration of molecules: it has been introduced in a chemistry course to explain several concepts related to inter-molecular interactions. After a brief description of the architecture of the developed system, the paper describes how it has been introduced in the usual didactic activity. Users' feedbacks and impressions are reported as result of this innovation in teaching

The rapid evolution of molecule's imaging and observation's techniques has caused a growing interest in studying molecular structures. Naturally, scientists have turned to simulation and 3D modeling in order to better understand biological phenomena. Thus, several 3D modeling systems have emerged. Some of these systems are dedicated to 3D visualization, and others are interested in 3D handling. However, we observed that these systems use classical 3D interaction techniques, frequently used in virtual reality (VR). On the other hand, the biological environment is very complex and binding as well. Thus, to remain faithful to the constraintes of the environment and be closer to natural behavior of molecules, we have tried to propose a 3D manipulation adapted to the domain, a bio-supervised 3D manipulation.

Abstract-With the invention of immersive displays and high technology multimedia systems, there is an interest among viewers for more realistic and interactive experience with video media. Their viewing experience can be further enhanced by letting them to feel the motion of objects in a video through haptic interface, as it becomes an additional sensation over seeing and hearing it. The objective of this research is to use the string based haptic interface, SPIDAR to interact with the video and enable the viewers to feel the motion of objects in it, beyond passive seeing and hearing. We propose two methods for object motion rendering, one using a linear gain controller and another using a nonlinear gain controller. Furthermore, we evaluated those two methods with the participation of real users, with the objective of identifying the better method. We can conclude that the method using a nonlinear gain controller is more effective than the method using a linear gain controller for object motion rendering since it enables the user to get a continuous feeling of the movement of objects in the video. Feedbacks of real users further enable us to conclude that haptic motion rendering of a video sequence enhances the viewing experience of viewers.
