A global meta-analyses of the response of multi-taxa diversity to grazing intensity in grasslands

Abstract: Livestock grazing is an important component and driver of biodiversity in grassland ecosystems. While numerous studies and a few meta-analyses had been conducted on the response of single taxon diversity to grazing in grasslands, a synthesis of how multi-taxa diversity is affected has been largely missing, especially reflecting its changes along a grazing intensity gradient. We performed a comprehensive meta-analyses of 116 published studies on the species richness (SR) and Shannon −Wiener index (H′) of plants… Show more

“…The relationship between the biotic and abiotic factors was investigated by Pearson's correlation and analysis of covariance. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to evaluate the hypothesized underlying factors that influence biodiversity in above‐ and belowground under different restoration methods (Wang et al, ; Wang & Tang, ) using the package “piecewise‐SEM” in R (Shipley, ). The restoration methods were converted to numeric variables in the SEM, where 0 represents natural recovery, and 1 represent sown treatments.…”

“…Mackey, et al [61] concluded from a meta-analysis that nonsignificant relationships between grazing disturbance and diversity, richness, and evenness are common. From the meta-analyses of Wang, et al [62], the plant diversity significantly increases after grazing, but the change of species richness and diversity affected by grazing is smaller from a world-wide meta-analysis [21].…”

“…For instance, Didiano et al (2014) found that only one out of four-studied plant species (Festuca rubra, the most abundant species) showed the evolutionary responses (trait differentiation in leaf numbers) in a long-term ([ 20 years) rabbit exclosure experiment in Silwood Park, England. Second, given that grazing intensity plays an important role in regulating plant communities ecologically (Wang and Tang 2019), their evolutionary effects may also only become apparent when grazing intensity is high. However, to my knowledge, the evolutionary responses of plant populations to grazing intensity along a successional gradient has rarely been studied.…”
