Purpose Doctoral programs are primarily intended to train new professors and researchers to take positions requiring research competency. This paper aims to observe the scientific production of 734 Brazilian new PhDs in management and the possible link between the scientific output of the graduates and doctoral program rank. Design/methodology/approach Methodologically, the authors built a database collecting the journal publications of the first six years after doctoral degree of all PhDs in management graduated by Brazilian doctoral programs during the period of 1998-2008. The authors use cluster and descriptive analysis to explore PhD publication. Findings Results show a great disparity of productivity, where 10 per cent of all new PhDs account for most of the Brazilian research productivity, while most of the PhDs have a very low performance – and that the CAPES (the Brazilian institutional system) qualification of doctoral programs is not a good predictor of the performance of the future graduates. Results are discussed to understand this productivity gap among researchers in a context of a developing country where support institutions are working to improve quantity and quality of publication. Practical implications The results are useful for recruiters that need to decide between hiring new PhDs with low productivity graduated from high-ranked programs or new PhDs with high productivity from programs with more modest ranking. At least in part, the authors’ results question the real impact that the doctoral program’s prestige has on the performance of its graduates. Social implications There are implications for the future candidates to a management PhD program, for the Directors of these programs and for the institutional agencies that regulate and promote science and that establish the prevailing rules and norms that researchers and institutions follow. Originality/value The results are adamant in pointing out that there is a small group of highly productive new PhDs – that the authors called “stars”. Generally speaking, they may find these “star” new PhDs in several doctoral programs. They have also found that some of the new PhDs have a relatively higher level of international papers published, but not necessarily a larger volume of publications. Meanwhile, most PhDs present a very low level of performance. This has important contributions to the way they perceive the doctoral education in management, especially in Ibero-America, revealing insights about the quality of PhDs and PhD courses.

Results of assessments bring changes to the organizational behavior and management of Higher Learning Institutions (HLI) and may or may not alter their institutional structure. Assessments have enabled HLI to rethink and redesign processes. As a result, institutions are becoming increasingly similar to each other, which is a phenomenon called coercive isomorphism. To propose a distinctive and positive element in the decision-making process, this study examined empirically how the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchic Process) can contribute to project prioritization in the Professional Master's Program in Business -Project Management of the University Nove de Julho (UNINOVE). This research was developed based on a case study from a theoreticalconceptual structure. This structure comprised the basis to develop and implement a structured questionnaire to build the multi-criteria hierarchical structure of the AHP method and obtain project prioritization and requirements of the assessment system developed by CAPES -Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, a government agency linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Education in charge of promoting high standards for post-graduate courses in Brazil). The results suggest that this approach can assist the coordinating committee of the Professional Master's Program of UNINOVE to prioritize projects and contribute to its performance improvement in the CAPES assessment system.

Identifying structural similarities between stricto sensu post-graduation programs in management regarding the strategy tripod

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the structural similarities between stricto sensu post-graduation programs in management through the formation of clusters, with the strategy tripod as a backdrop (Peng, 2002; Peng et al., 2009). Design/methodology/approach The co-plot method was used as a tool. It was chosen because it simultaneously enables joint and individual observations of comments and variables. Findings The results showed the formation of clusters among the programs, identifying a series of similarities between their components. The age and number of lines of research of the programs were the determining variables to identify isomorphism among the clusters. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of the study lies in the updating of information at the source of the data collection. All the data were collected from the Sucupira Platform for CAPES Triennial Evaluation of 2013. However, when the authors accessed the portals of the programs, the authors found that some data were outdated. Nevertheless, the authors limited themselves to using official data. Therefore, even if the authors found divergences or inconsistencies regarding the published information, the authors decided to use the official data made available by CAPES on the Sucupira Platform for the period in question. Originality/value Understanding that the results through the approaches of the industry-based view, resource-based view and institution-based view were insufficient for a thorough analysis, it is demonstrated in isolation that none of these succeeds in explaining the organizational context that permeates Brazilian stricto sensu post-graduation institutions. In this organizational field, the three views are not at the same theoretical level. The institutional view overlaps with the strategic competitive views. Therefore, the study contributes to reorganizing the strategy tripod and the proposed articulation between the arrangement of theory, method and field research.
