Windows and blinds play a significant role in both shaping energy consumption and enhancing indoor comfort. But there are still difficulties with selecting windows and blinds due to the existence of potential conflicts between visual comfort, thermal comfort, energy consumption and life-cycle cost. A literature review was conducted with the purpose of developing a decision-making framework that resolves the conflicts, and allows selecting a window and blind design based on trade-off between visual comfort, thermal comfort, energy consumption and life-cycle cost. The decision-making framework was developed by integrating nondominated sorting genetic algorithm-II as an optimization algorithm with analytical hierarchy process as a multi-criteria decision-making method. The optimization algorithm considers different window and blind design variables and analyses multiple designs, while the multi-criteria decisionmaking method ranks the optimization results and selects a trade-off design. An operating package enabled the decision-making framework to be automated. The operating package was obtained by coupling EnergyPlus as a simulation tool and modeFRONTIER as an integration platform. The decision-making framework was developed to select a trade-off window and blind design through intelligent use of simulation in analysing big-data in built environment, energy and cost sectors. Application of the framework ensures the minimum visual and thermal comfort thresholds with the lowest energy demand and cost. Architects and designers can use the framework during the design or renovation phase of residential and commercial buildings.

Various metaheuristic optimization methods have been applied in high-performance glazing and shading system design due to the complexity and nonlinear impact of the fenestration characteristics on the daylighting performance. However, the optimal solutions found by different optimization methods may vary because of the stochastic nature and the configurations of the optimization methods. This paper studied the improvements in the reliability, consistency and robustness of the genetic algorithm (GA) using hybridization with simulated annealing (SA) considering different cooling strategies in the SA, including the initial temperature and state transitions for each temperature, which controls the comprehensiveness and the convergence acceleration of the search by SA. Analysis of the reliability, consistency and robustness of the optimization methods based on the mean values and the variances of the objective function values of the best cases found in different methods revealed that there is a significant difference between the hybrid GA/SA with higher temperature and GA, where hybrid algorithm performed better than the GA.

There has been a rapidly growing interest among contemporary architects in recent years in the innovative use of curtain walls as a building enclosure. A curtain wall is a glass and metal skin that wraps the entire building in a continuous, transparent layer. This modern design provides a relatively desirable environment for the occupants. The glass façade allows light and diffused views into the surroundings during the day and can become a glowing and aesthetically pleasing aspect of the skyline at night. The key visual features of curtain walls are the glazing appearance and sightlines, but the window selection plays a key role in determining the overall building's environmental performance. The complex layering of glass should be strategic as well as artistic, balancing light and shade to optimize light and minimize heat gain. Recently, a series of curtain wall system have been developed with an emphasis on the technical issues, such as structural stability, energy efficiency, sustainable strategies, daylighting, and materials. This design case project explores in depth the overall environmental performance of the leading-edge curtain wall assemblies using computer programs such as Virtual Environment and Radiance, which allow estimation of total U-values and helps predict daylighting performance.
