Youth transitions literature has traditionally devoted great attention to identifying and analysing events that are considered crucial to young people regarding their (short term) orientation to the future and wider narratives of the self. Such categories as 'turning points' (Abbott 2001, Crow and Lyon 2011), 'critical moments' (Thomson et al. 2002, Holland & Thomson 2009, Thomson & Holland 2015, also used by Tomanović 2012) and 'crossroads' (Bagnoli & Ketokivi 2009) have been used to identify and explain the events around which young people take important decisions in order to realise the so-called transition to adulthood, each suggesting a sense of rupture. This focus sits within a central interest of youth transition literature, namely to investigate what hinders or facilitates independence. When looking more broadly at how young people imagine their future, however, taking a longer perspective opens insights not only in terms of ruptures, which these categories tend to refer to, but also in terms of the continuities that might also be very important in these narratives. Despite the methodological difficulties in getting young people to speak about their long term future, this paper seeks to discuss how they see their late adulthood through reflecting on how their narratives play out across different temporal horizons in order to establish their current priorities. Empirically, it is substantiated by essays on the future written by 18-year-old students based in Sardinia, and discusses in particular an emphasis which they put on the long term as a term of fulfilment of their values.

“…Ma è anche il caso di giovani appartenenti allo stesso "gruppo di frequentazione", ma con opportunità molto diverse: chi può sostenere la spesa di un alloggio in un altro contesto urbano al fine di frequentare l'università "fuori sede", pur non essendo "esattamente uno studente modello" (Francesco, 22 anni, studente, residente a Mestre) e chi è costretto a convivere con il pendolarismo quotidiano tra il quartiere di residenza e la città universitaria; chi non ha avuto "la necessità e l'interesse a cercare un lavoro perché, finché non mi laureo, comunque, ho la possibilità di farmi mantenere e vivere con i miei" (Nicola, 23 anni, studente, residente a Mestre) e chi deve conciliare impegni universitari o scolastici con quelli lavorativi (Colombo et al 2018). La crisi economica ha inasprito le diseguaglianze sociali, colpendo alcune categorie sociali, tra le quali i giovani: il loro tasso di disoccupazione è aumentato e gli investimenti sociali a loro dedicati sono stati ridimensionati. Se tale quadro strutturale è stato ben approfondito dalla letteratura sociologica, i contributi sulle percezioni dei giovani circa le diseguaglianze sociali sono ancora piuttosto rari. Il presente articolo analizza le narrazioni relative alle diseguaglianze sociali di giovani con diversi background, ma residenti nelle medesime municipalità (Mestre e Marghera) della Città di Venezia. Gli autori mostrano come tali narrazioni siano modellate sulla base dell'intersezione tra classe sociale, appartenenza "etnico-razziale" e nazionale, genere, età e collocazione spaziale nei quartieri dei giovani intervistati.

In Italy, young people often have to deal with both employment and income discontinuity. This co-existence is characteristic of Italy more than any other European country because it encompasses the employment experiences of young workers with a variety of skill levels, including those with higher qualifications, and it lasts over time. In other European countries, young people can rely on public support during unemployment even if they have had precarious jobs (e.g. Germany or Sweden). This condition represents an area of social risk that has not been fully conceptualized as such, and which we posit as the object of this chapter. In particular, the chapter aims to analyse some of the coping strategies that young Italians use to deal with income discontinuity, given the framework of opportunities and constraints that informs their actions.Young people's coping strategies, relative to representations, meanings and feelings were investigated through semi-structured interviews on two different samples of 100 young people in total, drawing from the projects 'Online training for the development of women's managerial skills. Women Online' and 'Except -Social Exclusion of Youth in Europe: Cumulative Disadvantage, Coping Strategies, Effective Policies and Transfer'. 1 A qualitative analysis allows for a more in-depth study of the different nuances of the problem. The study was concerned with both self-employed workers and workers with atypical contracts, as well as those with problems of precariousness and low labour-market attachment, and with different levels of education. What they had in common is that they were all lacking a so-called typical contract, in the sense of being permanent, dependent and full-time, and the workers being young (18-30 years). Being atypical on the Italian labour market and young at the same time are two conditions that in Italy, as in other European countries, are strongly linked. Comparative research (Mills and Blossfeld, 2003;Blossfeld et al., 2011a) has shown that young Europeans are increasingly subject to forms of temporary employment. They are at higher risk of unemployment and take longer to reach stable and continuous working conditions. This has led to the postponement of important decisions in their private lives and in the transition to adulthood.
