Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research is pleased to publish this virtual special issue containing review and research articles from authors who made outstanding presentations at the 252nd ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia. This compilation is our third such virtual special issue. We ask the chairs and organizers of symposia that align with I&EC Research subject areas to identify the best presentation from their session. We then invite these speakers to submit a manuscript to be published in I&EC Research and featured in the Virtual Special Issue. Each manuscript goes through our regular peer review process, and each accepted paper is then published with a note indicating that it was an invited contribution as a result of an outstanding presentation from a National ACS meeting.I&EC Research is delighted to showcase 29 papers in the ACS Philadelphia virtual special issue [http://pubs.acs.org/ page/iecred/vi/philadelphia-national-meeting2016]. One-third of the articles 1−10 deal with catalysts and catalyzed reactions. The articles include the use of advanced characterization techniques, studies employing first-principles approaches to elucidate mechanisms, and applications in photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and biocatalysis. Biomass or biomass-derived compounds are used in some articles, [3][4][5]10 as well as in others. 11−13 Targets being pursued include renewable fuels, renewable chemicals, and renewable materials. Eight of the articles 14−20 deal with synthesis, characterization, or use of different polymeric materials. Another theme that emerges from this collection is advances in materials for energy applications. 19,21,22 These articles discuss solar cells, supercapacitors, and hydrogen storage. This Virtual Special Issue also features new work on CO 2 capture and storage, 23−26 carbon nanotube assemblies, 27 gas separation, 28 and synthesis of nanomaterials for electronic devices.
