A gastropod-based biogeographic scheme for the European Neogene freshwater systems

Abstract: For the first time a palaeobiogeographic framework is proposed for European Neogene freshwater systems. The distribution of 2226 species-group taxa of freshwater gastropods from over 2700 Miocene and Pliocene localities was evaluated. The localities were grouped into palaeo-freshwater systems based on latest palaeogeographic reconstructions. Cluster analyses were computed for four time slices, i.e., Early Miocene, Middle Miocene, Late Miocene, and Pliocene. The analyses demonstrate a generally high degree of p… Show more

“…Gastropods did not diversify within several lake systems, such as the lakes in Chios and Aliveri-Kymi in Greece and Denizli, Harmancık and Urla in western Turkey before the latest Early Miocene to the Middle Miocene (Neubauer et al 2015). Therefore, the present findings constitute some of the oldest freshwater gastropod faunas of the area.…”

“…The Early Miocene freshwater gastropod faunas of the Aegean-Anatolian region are poorly known (Neubauer et al 2015). “…Neubauer et al 2015). In the Central Paratethys we compare these deposits with the Burkaliv Formation (Transcarpathian Basin) deposited in the eastern part of the Central Paratethys and to the lower part of the Stebnik Formation Correlation level III is substantiated through the analysis of available data on the nannoplankton and foraminifers, which enabled us to recognize the boundary of the LowerMiddle Miocene deposits of the Alma Depression.…”

“…It is conventionally traced in the rhythmic flysch-like sequence belonging to the Caucasian regional stage (Karadzhalganian -see e.g. Neubauer et al 2015), which was recognized as an analogue of the Aquitanian on the basis of benthic foraminifers, ostracods, spores and pollen. Due to the almost complete absence of carbonate facies, the nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifers are present only in the borehole sections of the Azov-Black Sea aquatory.…”
