The 2019 COVID-19 coronavirus disease, which has a significant influence on the medical tourism sector, necessitates the sector to focus on its online promotional messaging strategy. Given that the medical tourism sector is a global one, cultural diversity is also essential. However, promotional texts overlooked the cultural variabilities that can prevent potential global medical tourists from understanding the targeted marketing messaging. This study's objective was to look into the way in which selected Malaysian and Singaporean private hospital websites are presented to disseminate marketing messages to global patients travelling for medical treatment. For linguistic analysis, this study used Halliday's metafunction theory from the Systemic Functional Linguistic approach. The linguistic data were further analysed utilising the high and low context classification of cultures provided by Hall's cultural dimension of context dependency. High-context exhibits indirect communication and low-context demonstrates direct communication. The selected Malaysian and Singaporean webpages had features that were more common in low-context societies, such as complex code system, explicit message, highly structured message, focalisation of information and linear organisation. These findings were not consistent with the existing intercultural communication consulted in the literature which has associated Asian countries to high-context culture. The findings can assist stakeholders in medical tourism, website designers, and copywriters to understand the communicative strategies and possible cultural sensitivities in designing medical tourism websites for a country's successful international promotion.

This research examines ideational, interpersonal, and textual meanings by applying the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014). The qualitative methodology was used to comprehensively explain the meaning in a Japanese storybook entitled Kibou no Bokujou ‘A Livestock of Hope’ by Mori & Yoshida (2015). Based on the analysis of the lexico-grammatical aspect used in the text, it can be concluded that these three meanings simultaneously relate. Ideational meaning shows the domination of material processes generally found in children's narratives. Interpersonal meanings show a tendency of IndicativeDeclarative MOOD, which can be interpreted as the author of the storybook being positioned as the information provider to the readers. Textual meaning shows that the information distribution is frequently realized with the unmarked topical theme, which can be interpreted as most of the texts' subjects are farm owners and their cows. Meanwhile, the thematic progression is dominated by a reiteration pattern (constant theme). It can be interpreted that the same theme repeatedly and sequentially appears to help the readers understand the text. A storybook entitled Kibou no Bokujou has successfully provided information about the struggle of a farm owner who chose to stay on his farm after the earthquake and tsunami. The information is delivered in a narrative that can be easily understood without putting aside the entertainment aspect of a storybook.

This research is aimed to reveal the power relation in SMS (Short Service Messages) Phishing. It utilizes the three dimensions of Fairclough CDA perspective; description, interpretation, and explanation. The three functions of SFL (Systemic Functional Linguistics) are practiced for the data analysis. 150 SMS phishing are collected randomly from the authors’ relatives and colleagues. There are two types of SMS Phishing, Complete, and Incomplete. The complete type consists of Opening, Content, and Closing, while the Incomplete with minor Closing. The power relation has been observed from the Opening, Content, and Closing of SMS. The result is shown by the salient descriptions of the data, which are: the exclamation words ‘Selamat’ (65%) in the opening; the second personal pronoun ‘Anda’ (60%), and material process (68%) in the content; imperative moods (88%) and the fake identity of reputable institutions in the closing. The result of the study is interpreted and explained as the data description, that the phishers inserted ‘power’ in the SMS Phishing. The use of ‘Selamat’ explains that the phishers are kind and generous, then “Anda” and the imperative moods indicate that the phishers act as the first person who can lead the targets. In addition, the use of material processes and the fake reputable institution identity explains that the phishers are trustworthy and wealthy people. SMS Phishers employ those language features to make the targets believe them, and SMS becomes a fraud when the targets believe the message is true. CDA and SFL have been used in this study to reveal the intention of SMS phishing from the perspective of linguistics, therefore, the authors attempt to propose CDA and SFL as the analysis tools in the forensic linguistic field.
