A Full Body Steerable Wind Display for a Locomotion Interface

Abstract: This paper presents the Treadport Active Wind Tunnel (TPAWT)-a full-body immersive virtual environment for the Treadport locomotion interface designed for generating wind on a user from any frontal direction at speeds up to 20 kph. The goal is to simulate the experience of realistic wind while walking in an outdoor virtual environment. A recirculating-type wind tunnel was created around the pre-existing Treadport installation by adding a large fan, ducting, and enclosure walls. Two sheets of air in a non-intru… Show more

“…More findings regarding draught stimuli concerning gender effects are discussed in the later section. In summary, our results provide strong support for all research in developing wind simulation technologies (e.g., [Moon and Kim, 2004, Kulkarni et al, 2015, Ito et al, 2019).…”

“…As many people experience the sensation of wind on their entire body every day, we can easily immerse ourselves in VR presentations with wind displays. The latter can improve immersion by faithfully reproducing the motion of objects in VR environments [5], self-motions [6,12], and climates [11]. The reproduction of wind blowing from various directions is often crucial to simulate realistic wind.…”

“…This figure illustrates the Treadport environment, and not the experiments described in this article. An overall system view of the Treadport is difficult to record, due to the active wind tunnel enclosure described in Kulkarni et al (2015). speed experiments such as Souman et al (2011), Plotnik et al (2015), and Sloot, Krogt, and Harlaar (2014), a trend is emerging that self-paced treadmills require optical flow to minimize the difference between treadmill and overground self-selected speeds.…”
