A Framework for the Pragmatic Quality of Z Specifications

Abstract: Z is a formal specification language for describing sequential software systems. As the use of Z increases, the quality of Z specifications as effective means of communication arises. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a systematic assessment of the quality of Z specifications as perceived by their stakeholders. A pragmatic quality framework for Z specifications using notions from semiotics, cognitive psychology, and information system quality is proposed. The goals for pragmatic quality, and manageable… Show more

“…Syntax is the domain of the representamen which means the formal or structural relations between signs; semantics is "the domain of object which means the relationship of signs to what they stand for; and pragmatics is the domain of interpretant which means the relation of signs to interpreters". (12) Thus, to analyze a text by employing this theory, there are few steps that can be done. First, decide the 'Firstness' of the text or the representamen of the thing that wants to be analyzed.…”

“…. and the film scholars on the other side, claiming how well a film can translate novel, of any quality, especially those of the best quality, into an artistic masterpiece 12 . (1) Therefore, Snyder (2011) provides five critical approaches to the literature-to-film adaptation that are still under the idea of intertextual comparison as the following: adaptability analysis, adaptation process analysis, fidelity/infidelity analysis, specificity analysis, and audience reception anxiety analysis (1).…”

“…In his paper, he discussed how semiotic concepts apply to programming languages, making an analogy with natural languages, with special attention to pragmatics. An example of a combination of semiotic and cognitive approaches can be found in the work by Kamthan, in which he developed a framework based on concepts from semiotics and on the CDN framework to evaluate formal specifications using the Z language (70).…”
