“…Studies to date of counselors and/or counseling trainees have focused primarily on counselor needs and personality characteristics (Heikkinen & Wenger, 1973;Randolph, 1973;Randolph, Caston, & Wright, 1977;Rowley, 1975) and on the relationship of these to counseling effectiveness (Jackson & Thompson, 1971;Jansen, Robb, & Bonk, 1970Loesch, Crane, & Rucker, 1978;Rowe, Murphy, & DeCsipkes, 1975;Tinsley & Tinsley, 1977b). And although some research has examined the vocational interests of psychologists in general (e.g., Campbell, 1977;Kriedt, 1949;Vinitsky, 1973), only Dolliver and Worthington (1981), and Tinsley and Tinsley-(1977a) have investigated the vocational interests of counselors or counseling trainees. No study to date has used the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory in the examination of the interests of counseling trainees; because the SCII provides General Occupational (i.e., Holland) Theme scores as well as the Basic Interest and Occupational Scale scores available on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, it offers a potentially broad view of these interest patterns.…”

“…While the most common activity was counseling/ psychotherapy (as might be expected), it was also the most widely varied in terms of time spent. These observations, along with those of a longitudinal study relating Strong Vocational Interest Blank profiles to major professional activities over a 40-year period (Vinitsky 1973), strongly suggest that counselors should constantly keep in mind (a) the wide latitude of behaviors available within a given occupation and (b) the importance of viewing a career as a series of potentially changing jobs or positions providing the opportunity for involvement in a large variety of professional activities.…”
