A follow‐up study of children with food allergy. Clinical course in relation to serum IgE‐ and IgG‐antibody levels to milk, egg and fish

Abstract: SummaryEighty‐two children with food sensitivity were followed‐up for 2‐5 years. Most children showed a decreasing sensitivity and the clinical course of food allergy seemed to reflect the course of the humoral immune responses to the offending foods. The occurrence of IgE‐ and IgG‐antibodies parallelled in most cases. However, an early, high IgG/IgE food antibody ratio seemed to be a good prognostic sign, indicating a possible blocking capacity of IgG‐antibodies.

“…Recombinant allergens improve the diagnosis of food allergy (1217). The presence of food-specific IgE in serum or a positive skin test to a foodstuff does not always correlate with food allergic symptoms because many patients outgrow their allergy with age (1383,1384) and not all patients with food-specific IgE have a clinical sensitivity (1385). In many instances, the diagnosis has to be confirmed by a double-blind food challenge that should be carried out under precisely specified conditions (1386)(1387)(1388) and by trained staff who have the competence to manage anaphylactic reactions.…”

“…Das gilt nicht für Allergien gegen Erdnuss, Baumnüsse und Fisch, die eine zumeist lebenslange Persistenz zeigen [33]. Durch bewiesene Nahrungsmittelallergien notwendig gewordene Diä-ten sollten in Zusammenarbeit mit allergologisch ausgebildeten Ernährungsfachkräften zusammengestellt werden, damit es nicht zu einer Fehlernährung insbesondere im Kindesalter kommt [1].…”
